1. Vishnu Vāman Shirwādkar, popularly known by his pen name, Kusumāgraj, is one of the most eminent Marathi poets, playwriters, novelists, and short story writers. He has worked on humanitarian subjects like justice, freedom, the liberation of the underprivileged.  Over five decades of a dedicated career, his work showcases numerous poems, novels, short stories, and essays; Vishakha (1942) and Natsamrat are his most famous works. He has received national awards and various other awards for his work. As an honor of his contribution to Marathi literature, his birthday on February 27 is celebrated as ‘ Marathi Bhasha Din.’

2. Vinda Karandikar, better known as Vinda, is a poet, writer, literary critic, and translator. Additionally, he has contributed to Marathi literature as an essayist too. He translated Poetics of Aristotle and King Lear of Shakespeare in Marathi. Some of his best works include Sparshaachi Palvi (1958) and Akashacha Arth (1965). He has also worked on a collection of his analytical reviews – Parampara ani Navata (1967).

3. Durga Narayan Bhagwat is a scholar, socialist, and writer. She also studied Sanskrit and Buddhist literature and worked as a researcher. She is known for being the foremost female writer in Marathi. Some of her noteworthy works include a biography of Rajaram Shastri Bhagwat, Vyas Parva, Rutuchakra, and Pais. She has also written many articles on cooking and crafts and was known as the ‘Marathi Saraswatachi Saraswati’.

4. Shivaji Sawant is a Marathi novelist. Popularly known as Mrutyunjaykaar (after his popular book Mrutyunjay), Shivaji Sawant is the first-ever Marathi writer that was awarded the Moortidevi Award in 1994. His book Mrutyunjay, based on one of the leading characters of the Mahabharata- Karna, received numerous awards and accolades. This book was later translated into Hindi, English,  KannadaGujarati, and  Malayalam. Another famous novel of his was Chhava, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji.

5. Manik Godghate, who is also popularly known by his pen name, Grace is a famous lyricist of the Marathi song “Bhaya Ithale Sampat Nahi,” sung by Lata Mangeshkar as the title track for the TV serial Mahashweta. His book Vaaryane Halte Raan was awarded the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2011. His works include Churchbell and Mitvaa in prose, and Sandhyaakalchya KavitaRajputra Aani DarlingSaanjbhayaachayaa Saajani, and Chandramadhaviche Pradesh in poetry.
